THE GREAT CREW CHANGE
The American Petroleum Institute recently stated that an industry phenomenon known as the “Great Crew Change” could see up to 50% of the oil and natural gas industry’s skilled workers retire within the next five to seven years!
Our associate degree programs answer the industry’s need for a trained workforce in all sectors of the petroleum and natural gas industry. These not only include drilling and completion of wells but also moving petroleum and natural gas to distributors for delivery to customers.
WHAT DO OUR PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS PROGRAMS INVOLVE?
Lackawanna College offers two associate-level tracks at our School of Petroleum & Natural Gas:
The business administration track educates students in the business practices employed by oil and gas companies. You’ll still learn about the discovery, drilling, processing, and supplying of these natural resources, but you’ll be taught the business principles that go along with them.
The idea is that you will be prepared to enter the oil and natural gas industry with the skills to work in accounting, financial, management, human resources, or marketing positions.
Meanwhile, the technology track trains students to become certified operations technicians in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
As gas technicians or petroleum technicians, students will produce and process oil and natural gas. Lackawanna’s program educates students in the procedures by which oil and gas make it from the ground to processing plants to people’s homes and businesses. Students learn about drilling, compression, pipelining, and safety, among other subjects.
Students also get the chance to intern in the field for four weeks with an oil and gas employer. All of this training together will prepare graduates for fruitful careers in oil and gas technology no matter where they go.
- Petroleum & Natural Gas Compressor/Engine Mechanic Certificate
- Petroleum & Natural Gas Technician Certificate
PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS CAREER OPTIONS
Once students graduate from either one of our petroleum and natural gas degree programs, they will have options regarding where they work. Graduates may find work at an operating company that produces these resources, a drilling company that employs technicians onshore and offshore, or service-based companies that work with oil and natural gas.
What can students expect for an oil or natural gas technician salary? According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median pay for geological and petroleum technicians in 2019 was $51,130. The BLS projected in 2019 that this industry as a whole would grow by about 5 percent between 2019 and 2029.
