School Programs

The Environmental Center operates school programs throughout the year, including field trips and the Building Connections program.

Field Trips

School field trip programs combine hands-on activities with an exploratory walk on LCEEC’s 211-acre property and meet many of the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s academic standards for Environmental and Ecology and Science and Technology.

Schools and other organized groups are encouraged to visit for a field trip, and programs are available for Pre-K to 12th grades. Topics include biodiversity, alternative energy, new technology, and conservation.

To schedule a field trip, please contact the LCEEC at (570) 842-1506 or email yaniks@lackawanna.edu.

Field trips are sponsored in part by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development, Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.

Building Connections

Students have planted trees at the College’s Scranton campus as part of the Building Connections program.

Building Connections is a yearlong program for teachers and students in grades 7 and 8 that focus on how local communities are connecting to the area’s most prominent natural resources – the Lackawanna and Susquehanna River Watersheds.

Participants will learn about watersheds, biodiversity, urban forestry, and conservation of our natural resources from local experts and through experiential outdoor education. Students will gain valuable experiences in subject areas that will support the Pennsylvania Envirothon Competition and guide students in their career paths. Building Connections also meets many of the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s academic standards for Environmental and Ecology and Science and Technology.

Teams of up to 8 students and 1 advisor meet during 4 sessions throughout the school year. Each session begins at 9:15 am and ends at 1:45 pm. General topics covered throughout the year include:

  • September: Aquatic Study at Lackawanna State Park
  • October: Urban Forestry in Downtown Scranton
  • April: Biodiversity at the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center
  • May: Environment & Technology at Merli Sarnoski Park

Building Connections is a partnership with the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at Lackawanna State Park and is sponsored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development, Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.
