Peirce College to Merge with Lackawanna College

Peirce College is set to merge with Lackawanna College, with both institutions signing a definite agreement. The merger will make Lackawanna College the largest private, nonprofit, open enrollment institution in the state.

A Shared Belief for Accessible Education

This merger is rooted in the idea that both institutions are stronger together, and poised to help more Pennsylvanians enhance their livelihoods through accessible, affordable, and high-quality education. The coming together of the colleges is set to transform the landscape of higher education in Pennsylvania.

“At Lackawanna, we’ve always believed in harnessing the power of likeminded partners, and both Lackawanna and Peirce have long been committed to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality education to individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our intent to merge is a direct reflection of that vision and our shared values,” President and Chief Innovation Officer of Lackawanna College, Jill Murray Ph.D. said. “As one institution, we’ll be able to ensure all people from all stages of life have the unique opportunity to grow their skills, achieve career readiness and realize the dreams that powerful education can unlock.”

Expanding Our Reach and Offerings

Building on this shared vision, the merger will expand Lackawanna’s geographical presence to serve students in eight locations and online.

With the geographical expansion comes a programmatic enhancement as well. Through the combined academic offerings of both colleges, students will be able to take an expanded portfolio of courses for master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees, certificates, and dual enrollment programs. By integrating Peirce College’s focus on career-oriented, flexible academic programs tailored to the needs of busy adults, the combined colleges will empower learning at all stages of life.

“Innovation and collaboration are essential in today’s market as the evolving needs of our students and the demands of today’s workforce continue to change how institutions operate,” President and CEO of Peirce College, Mary Ellen Caro Ph.D. said. “By joining forces with Lackawanna College, we will leverage our core competencies and expand programs to serve more students in the Philadelphia region, the Scranton region and beyond. We look forward to increasing the pipeline of diverse talent throughout Pennsylvania with career-focused programs that meet the needs of students and employers.”

Innovation at the Forefront

The merger underlines the importance of innovation and collaboration in addressing the evolving needs of students and the workforce. Both institutions will work closely on integration planning as they seek the required approvals from the appropriate accrediting and government agencies.
