Lackawanna College Adding New Center in Tunkhannock

SCRANTON, Pa. – Oct. 7, 2020 – Lackawanna College has announced that it is opening a new Center in Tunkhannock, which will house the College’s School of Petroleum and Natural Gas as well as other degree and certificate programs. The Center is slated to open for the Fall 2021 semester.

“We are so excited to add Tunkhannock as another Lackawanna College location to serve even more students in northeastern and central Pennsylvania,” said Lackawanna College President Dr. Jill Murray. “As the College continues to grow, we are always looking for more opportunities to offer an affordable, accessible education, which leads to family-sustaining jobs in our community.”

Partners in the natural gas industry have expressed overwhelming support for the move to Tunkhannock.

“We are thrilled to see how much the School of Petroleum and Natural Gas has grown and matured in the past six years,” said George Stark, external affairs director of Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation. “Lackawanna College has become an educational force in Northeast PA and we know this move will give them the opportunity to expand both their physical presence but also their programs and offerings.”

“Over the years we have hired many Lackawanna College School of Petroleum and Natural Gas students who have turned out to be exceptional employees,” said Ray Stiffler, Director of Operations for Williams,  which handles approximately 30 percent of the natural gas in the United States that is used every day for clean-power generation, heating and industrial use. “We are excited to have the new center located right in our own backyard as we continue to grow our relationship with the college. This is a great opportunity to develop the talent we need to run our operations while also providing rewarding careers for ambitious technical workers.”

Lackawanna has also received support from community partners and school districts in the region.

“Tunkhannock Area School District is excited about the opportunities that a local Center provides for our students,” said Heather McPherson, superintendent of Tunkhannock Area School District. “We look forward to building on our existing relationship with Lackawanna College.”

Lackawanna College’s other locations include the main campus in Scranton as well as Centers in Covington Twp., Hawley, Hazleton, New Milford, Sunbury and Towanda. The School of Petroleum and Natural Gas will relocate from New Milford to Tunkhannock.
