Lackawanna College has been closely monitoring developments related to Coronavirus (COVID-19). College officials, as well as the Campus Safety Committee, are meeting regularly to discuss the latest information available and develop appropriate responses. 

There are confirmed cases in the State of Pennsylvania. Those exhibiting flu-like symptoms are encouraged to stay home and contact their health care provider for an evaluation.

Campus Screening Measures

#CampusClear is a free mobile application that is part of Lackawanna College’s plan to return to campus safely.

First-time users will need to verify if they are a student, employee, or visitor. Students and employees should register using their Lackawanna College email address.

Every person should conduct their daily self-screening through #CampusClear before coming to campus. Students, staff, and visitors may be asked to provide their self-screening results at any time, and any person who cannot produce that day’s screening result will be required to leave campus immediately.

CARES Act Relief FAQ

What is the CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant?
The CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant Fund provides emergency financial assistance to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus as stipulated by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act, which was signed into law March 27, 2020.

Lackawanna College received CARES Act funding and will distribute it as emergency financial grants to eligible students by prioritizing need while ensuring the funds are distributed as widely as possible. This grant is separate from additional financial aid you may receive from Lackawanna College.

Who is eligible for the CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant?
Students who meet all criteria below are eligible for the grant:

  • Working towards a degree or certificate at Lackawanna College and eligible for Title IV funding;
  • Were enrolled at Lackawanna College in at least one on-ground/in-person course as of Monday, March 23, 2020, even if that course moved to an online format due to the pandemic;
  • Have a valid 2019-2020 FAFSA on file with Lackawanna College Financial Aid Office.

Unfortunately, per the U.S. Department of Education, DACA, undocumented, or international students, and students enrolled exclusively in online courses are not eligible to receive CARES Act funding.

How much will eligible students receive in the CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant?
Each eligible residential and commuter student will receive a payment of $545 to cover their eligible expenses resulting from the disruption of campus operations. If an eligible student can substantiate additional costs associated with the disruption of campus activities due to the coronavirus, the student may submit a request for additional funds through an application process.

What types of expenses can eligible students cover with funds from the CARES Act emergency fund?
The emergency funds must be used to cover basic needs students incurred due to the disruption of college campus operations due to coronavirus such as:

  • Food
  • Housing
  • Course materials
  • Technology-related expenses (such as having to buy a computer when courses were moved online)
  • Health care
  • Child care
  • Transportation (such as having to fly home because classes were canceled)

The CARES Act stipulates that the emergency funds cannot be used to replace a loss of income or to pay for student expenses that are not directly related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

How does an eligible student apply for additional emergency funds?
Students must complete Lackawanna College’s application for a CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant to be considered for any additional funds above the $545 per student grant.

Because the amount of the CARES Act funding is limited, the College cannot guarantee additional funding to any student, but each application received will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis until the funds are exhausted. Students must be able to substantiate their need for additional funding. The College reserves the right to use its discretion in evaluating the applications and determining the amount of each award, which may include establishing a maximum amount.

When will eligible students receive the CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant?

How will eligible students receive CARE Act funds?
Eligible students will receive funds via check mailed to the student’s last known address on file at Lackawanna College. To ensure timely delivery of your funds, please follow the directions to ensure your address is correct on the Portal.

Do I need to report CARES Act grants on my federal tax return?
No, per guidance issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant is not to be included as income on your federal tax return. Click here for additional guidance from the IRS.

Student Coronavirus Spring 2021 FAQ

What are my options for how I attend class in the fall 2020 semester?

Students may choose online courses that run in 7.5-week subterms or traditional courses that run for the full 15-week semester.

A large number of traditional 15-week courses are running virtually in fall 2020. This depends on the student’s location and program.  Students can find out if their course is running virtually by viewing the building and room for their course.  The building and room for a virtual course will be listed as “VIRT.”

What is the difference between online and virtual?
Online courses are generally asynchronous and run for 7.5 weeks. Virtual courses typically have a synchronous component (via Zoom) once per week and run for 15 weeks.

How will I know when my virtual class will meet?
The meeting time and days are listed on each student’s schedule.

How do I find the Zoom information for my virtual class?
Zoom information will be posted weekly for the relevant course in Canvas.  Further questions related to Zoom information can be obtained by emailing the individual instructor to ask questions.

If I don’t have any in-person classes, can I still use the support services or computer labs on campus?
Yes, you can access all of our offices on-campus by scheduling an appointment through Starfish. If you log into Starfish via the Canvas menu, you will see the service option under the menu tab. When you click on the service you are looking for, you will find out the contact information and the link to schedule an appointment if needed.

Computer labs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Computer labs will undergo routine cleaning and are set up for social distancing requirements.

How can I get information that is usually given at Academic Orientation?

How will I meet with my academic advisor during the advising periods if we are not on campus?
We strongly encourage meetings with your academic advisor during this semester!  Your assigned academic advisors are listed in your Starfish network. You can click on your advisor’s name to see what appointment options are available.  Advisors will be able to meet with you via email, phone, zoom, or in person if desired.  Make sure to connect with your advisor during the first advising period which will begin on September 9.

How do I access academic support services if I cannot get to campus?
You can access tutoring and academic success services virtually by scheduling an online appointment through Starfish. Please watch the tutorial on how to schedule support services.

I didn’t do well in the spring semester when everything went online. How can I be successful this semester?
The spring semester was a transition for students, staff, and faculty. We have used the summer to learn from those experiences and prepare for the fall semester. Our faculty are dedicated to providing you with the best educational experience in whatever format you participate in. The key to success is reaching out as soon as you begin to struggle. The Student Success Center is available to meet with you in-person or virtually to discuss your goals and obstacles to reaching those goals. It is important that you communicate your concerns and respond when we are reaching out to you to help connect you with resources. Whether it’s working out a schedule to better manage your time or getting connected with a tutor, we have supports to help you succeed.

I haven’t received my student ID yet, how do I receive my ID?
Public Safety will be available to provide Student IDs on August 25-26 and September 1- 2, from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Student ID cards are issued during move-in weekend for residents who are staying on campus. When you arrive on campus and complete the screening process you will be directed to the Lackawanna College Public Safety Building located on 540 Wyoming Ave. Scranton, PA. where Public Safety can make your ID card for you.

For commuter students, you can call Public Safety at 570-241-2022 if you are on campus and let the on-duty officer know you would like to get your ID card.  An Officer will meet you at the Public Safety Building where your card can be obtained.  If you lose your issued card or break your card a new card can be made for you at the Public Safety Building. What is the screening process for coming on campus?

All staff, faculty, students, and visitors on campus are required to participate in daily self-screenings. The following guidelines should be adhered to:

All individuals are required to self-screen daily prior to arriving on campus. Screening facilitated through Campus Clear, available from Apple, Google Play, or via Web App at  For step by step process on how to download the Campus Clear app and use it, please refer to the addenda “Daily Screening Guide.”

Individuals who receive a “good to go” pass from Campus Clear are permitted to be on campus for that day. Screening must be done each day prior to arriving on campus.

Individuals who receive a “not cleared for campus access’ should stay home and not travel to campus that day.

Resident students should stay in their assigned room and contact the Director of Student Engagement & Housing.

Non-resident students may reach out to the Student Success office for guidance.

Employees should notify their direct supervisor and human resources.

Visitors will be required to complete Campus Clear screening.  They are encouraged to do so prior to arriving on campus.  Every effort should be made to inform potential visitors of this expectation.  Visitors should be made aware of this requirement when scheduling appointments.  Visitors arriving on campus without access to the campus clear app may complete screening at a designated screening station on campus via laptop/tablet.  Wall-mounted thermometers are available at all locations for visitors to self-screen if needed.

All individuals must be able to provide their Campus Clear “good to go” electronic pass when asked.   Pass checks may occur anywhere on campus including random entry points, by faculty prior to the start of the class, or in-office settings.  Department managers are encouraged to monitor the staff’s compliance.

Signage will be posted within entry areas reminding individuals of the Campus Clear screening process, COVID symptoms, and regulations.

Students, faculty, or staff who acknowledge they are symptomatic, have had close contact with an individual who has COVID-19 symptoms or who has received positive test results will not be approved for campus access. The individual should return home and self-isolate. Details on self-isolation and close contact are provided in this document.

Staff, faculty, and students who have recovered from recent symptoms may return to campus after:

24 hours with no fever without the use of medication; and symptoms improved; and 10 days since symptoms first appeared.

Depending on your healthcare provider’s advice and availability of testing, you might get tested to see if you still have COVID-19. If you will be tested, you can be around others when you have no fever, symptoms have improved, and you receive two negative test results in a row, at least 24 hours apart.

I still have my hands-on classes in person. What am I allowed to bring to campus with me? Are we limiting items?
Please only bring what is needed with you when you come to campus. We do suggest that if you are using the computer labs for coursework, that you bring headphones so that you do not disturb others using the lab.

I am attending class on campus or living in the residence hall. What are my dining options?

Now that my classes are all online or virtual, will my financial aid be impacted? 
Financial Aid will not be reduced due to participation in all online or virtual courses. If you have any questions regarding your financial aid, please email

I’m no longer living in a residence hall, how will I know what my new balance is? 
Log into your Lackawanna College portal at to access your account balance.

I am no longer living on campus and will be receiving a refund. Can I use that money toward the spring semester so that I don’t have such a large bill for the spring? What are my other options?
You can use your excess funds towards the spring semester and we strongly encourage you to do so. You will need to sign an authorization form to hold excess funds. The form is available from the Student Accounts Office and you can contact them at Please make sure to purchase any books if you plan on using your financial aid for payment prior to signing those funds over to the spring.

If you do not use your funds for the spring semester, you will receive a refund. The refunds will be mailed out.

I noticed an activity fee on my bill since we aren’t on campus. Do I still need to pay this fee?
All fees will remain the same for the semester because we will continue to offer those services. Providing virtual programming can sometimes cost more than in-person and we want to provide as many options as possible.  We encourage you to take advantage of all the services we have to offer.

Now that my classes are online or virtual, I need a computer, what are my options for using or purchasing a computer?
Computer Labs – In Scranton, at least three computer labs in Angeli and one in Seeley will be available for student use on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each Center will also have at least one computer lab available during the Center’s hours of operation. Computer labs at all locations will follow social distancing guidelines.

Computer Reimbursement Program – The College will reimburse eligible students up to $375 for the purchase of a computer. Funds for this program are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Reimbursement will be made upon proof of purchase and paid after the second week of class to ensure attendance at Lackawanna College. The application for the reimbursement program will close on September 6, 2020.

Laptop Loaner Program – For students with demonstrated need, Lackawanna College will have a number of laptop computers available to loan out for use during the academic year. Students will be expected to maintain the computer in good working order and return the laptop at the end of the academic year. Failure to do so will result in the student being charged an amount up to the cost of the laptop.

The application for the laptop reimbursement and loaner program can now be accessed on your portal.  You must be signed in to complete the application. Please make sure that you provide all information in your application. I do not have any internet, or my internet connection at my home is poor. What are my options?
Visit one of our computer labs
If you don’t have access to an internet connection, visit one of our computer labs during business hours.  All computer labs will follow social distancing guidelines and be available on a first-come, first-served basis.   Each of the centers has one computer lab and there are four computer labs at Scranton located in Angeli Hall rooms 208, 209, 210, and 213.

Connect to LC Wifi outside of one of our buildings
We have several locations that have an internet connection outside the building. Please note that signal strength will be strongest as you get closer to the building.

  • Covington in the upper lot handicap parking spots and in the driveway near the garage.
  • Hazleton in the street parking in front of the building.
  • Lake Region in the far corner of the upper parking lot in the first row closest to the building.
  • New Milford in the parking lot closest to the buildings.
  • Scranton in the parking lot near the side entrance to 540 Wyoming Avenue and in the top parking lot of Tobin Hall.
  • Sunbury in the parking lot in front of the building.
  • Towanda in the parking lot by the office or in the top parking lot on the front left side or front parking lot of building.

If I’m coming on campus to use the computer lab or other services, do I still need a parking pass or can I park anywhere?
If you plan to park in one of our campus lots during class or while receiving student services, you can have a parking pass issued for the semester. In order to obtain your parking permit you will have to fill out the online application before it can be issued.  You can log into the Lackawanna College portal and click on the Public Safety page.  Look for the Parking Permit link, click on the link and fill out the required information.

You will also need to make sure your payments are up to date with Student Accounts prior to receiving a parking pass.

I am an athlete and need to remain eligible for my Spring season. How many classes do I need to pass?
To be eligible for the Spring 2021 semester, true Freshman must pass 12 credit hours with a GPA of 1.75. Sophomores and Freshmen who are in their second or more full-time semester must pass 12 credit hours with a GPA of 2.00. The preceding is the general eligibility rule. You should discuss accumulation exceptions with Joe Paparelli, the Director of Compliance if you failed to meet the eligibility rule set forth above.

It is important to remember that you must meet the NJCAA progress requirement of 24 earned hours with a 2.00 GPA to play as a second-year player. This requirement is in addition to the need to meet the previous term or accumulation eligibility requirements.

It is advisable that Freshmen enrolling in the 2020-2021  Academic Year to play a traditional Fall semester sport, should take 2020 Fall semester courses. If they enroll only in the spring semester, they will find it extremely challenging to meet the progress requirement before the next sport season in the Fall of 2021.

What do I do if I am having a mental health emergency?
If there is a safety concern for yourself or others please call Public Safety at (570) 961-7899 or (570) 241-2022. Public Safety will contact the SWP and they will then support the student through the crisis & follow up.

How do I access the various supports and resources offered through Student Wellness if I am not on campus?

How do I continue to take part in Student Wellness programming if we are not on campus?
The Student Wellness Program will be conducting virtual preventative programming through Facebook, Instagram, and email. Please check your email & the SWP portal page for all upcoming events.

How can I take part in the Wellvolution this semester if all programming is virtual?
In order to be put into virtual programming raffles students must complete the SWP event survey for each event they attend. This semester the winner will not be picked by cumulative points but by participating in the event survey which then puts their name into a raffle for VISA gift cards.

I don’t want to miss out on the college experience. What kind of programming can I look for in the Fall 2020 semester? 
Programming will be held both virtually and in person.  In-person programming will follow all social distancing guidelines.

Will masks be required while in the residence hall? 
While you are in your room no masks are required, though each time you leave your room for any reason a mask is required.

I don’t live on campus, but I’d like to visit my friend in their residence hall. Am I allowed to visit my friend in their residence hall? 
In an attempt to keep our students safe, staff, and families, there is no outside visitation allowed in the residence halls.  This includes outside guests and guests from other halls.

Will I still have access to campus services while living in the residence hall? 
All services Lackawanna College has to offer will still be available.  You can see your RA or Residence Hall Director to help guide you to the appropriate resource you are looking for

Why have I stopped receiving emails to my Falcons email this summer?
We migrated student email accounts from Google to Office 365 on July 3.

What you need to know
Some usernames have changed.
Usernames and email addresses have not changed for the majority of students.  The only exception will be students who had a username with more than 18 characters (this includes the period between the first and last name).  We removed the hyphens from these accounts and cut the name off at the 18 characters.  We sent an email to all students including the username and instructions to access the 365 accounts.

Passwords did not change.

Accessing Office 365

  • Open any browser and type

Accessing GMAIL accounts

  • Go to and click Old Falcons Email (GMAIL) link under the Quick Links menu on the left.

NOTE: The GMAIL account will remain active until December 2020.  Once we deactivate this account students will no longer be able to access emails, contacts, and calendar data unless it was previously exported or backed up.  We did provide students with steps to migrate this data to their Office 365 accounts.

Copying contacts, mail, and calendar data into Office 365.

  • See the attached document (Add GMAIL to Outlook.docx) for instructions to connect your GMAIL account to Outlook.  Then follow these steps to import Google email into Office 365 using Outlook.
  • Follow these steps to export and import contacts and calendar events.

NOTE: This option will only be available until December 2020 at which time your GMAIL account will be deactivated.

  • These tools will still be available.  If you would like to export and download your data follow these steps.
  • If you logged into Office 365 with your Falcons email address prior to this transition to download Office or access OneDrive, your password automatically changed to your portal password.

Now that my Falcons email has changed from Gmail to Office 365, how do I add Gmail to Outlook?

Check that IMAP is turned on:

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the top right, click settings then see all settings.
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In the “IMAP Access” section, select Enable IMAP.
  5. Click Save Changes.

  • Select File.
  • Select Add Account. The Add Account window opens.
  • Select Advanced Options.
  • Select Let Me Set Up My Account Manually.
  • Enter your email address, then select Connect.
  • Select IMAP.
  • Enter your password, then select Connect.

CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Acknowledgement

Lackawanna College acknowledges that it has signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement and the Assurance that Lackawanna College has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 1800(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

The total amount of funds that the institution has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants is $942,674.

The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is $814,697.16.

The estimated total number of students at Lackawanna College eligible to participate in the programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and therefore eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 2,034.

The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 1,451.

The method used to determine distribution of funds was to identify groups based on need. We identified that the vast majority of Lackawanna students are PELL grant eligible and that they would be given an amount based on calculation of need. We also recognize that students not eligible for PELL, but still eligible for Title IV funding, do not always receive family support, therefore all Title IV eligible students who filed a FAFSA should receive some funds from the grant. We then identified costs associated with increased expenses due to the COVID 19 disruption in each allowed category. We identified needs for all resident students and all commuter students. This resulted in a $5 difference for resident and commuter students eligible, so we decided to provide the same amount ($545) to all students who are eligible. This amount was determined to be the minimum amount of expense increase due to the COVID 19 disruption. We also recognize that some students have a greater need and had additional costs due to the transition. We provided an application for eligible students to apply for additional grant money that did not cover all of their additional expenses. The students must document their reasons for additional expenditures and the eligible categories in which they would be applied. The CARES Act Relief Fund Task Force will review all submitted applications and provide additional grants for those seeking eligible funds until the remaining funds are exhausted. To receive laptop reimbursement, the following guidelines apply: 1. Student must be enrolled at The College; 2. Laptop must be purchased after March 16th for student enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester and after May 8th for student enrolled in the Fall 2020 semester; 3. Student must have a FAFSA on file or provide required documentation of eligibility; 4. Student cannot be enrolled in a fully online program or plan to be online only. Student can be enrolled in all online courses for Fall 2020 due to COVID-19 and inability to attend in-person classes; and 5. Student must provide a receipt and will be reimbursed up to $375 for technology. All applications are reviewed for accuracy and receipts are reviewed prior to approval.

General Coronavirus FAQ

What is novel coronavirus?
2019-nCoV is a newly identified coronavirus that is causing an outbreak of flu illness. The virus causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person-to-person. This virus was first identified in China. Since then there have been several countries and states that have had outbreaks. According to the CDC, these symptoms are very similar to the flu.

What are the symptoms of novel coronavirus?
Common signs of coronavirus include mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death.

How does novel coronavirus spread?
The novel coronavirus is spread person-to-person through the air by coughing or sneezing and through contact with infected surfaces.

What should I do if I feel sick?
Students at the Scranton campus exhibiting these symptoms can visit College Health Services, Seeley Hall, 406 N. Washington Ave. or at the Scranton Primary Health Care Center (SPHCC). Students can reach SPHCC at (570) 344-9684 or (570) 969-9662.

How can I protect myself?
COVID-19 vaccinations are currently available. If you have received the vaccine, please continue to follow standard coronavirus protections such as wearing a mask and social distancing. In order to prevent illness, cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, wash hands as often as possible for at least 20 seconds at a time, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap is not available and clean all surfaces as frequently as possible.

What can I do if I’m missing class due to the flu or flu-like symptoms?

  • Email your instructors to notify them of the reason for your absence.
  • Return to class 24 hours after your fever has ended without fever-reducing medicine or when you have been cleared by a medical professional.
  • If you will be absent for an extended period of time due to illness or are struggling to keep up with assignments, or reach out to your Center director to discuss your academic plan. Student Success and Center directors can also be found in Starfish under your network services.
