Lackawanna College Announces New Scholarship For Local High-Achieving Students
SCRANTON, Pa. – May 13, 2020 – Lackawanna College has announced it will offer full-tuition and half-tuition scholarships to top-ranked students in each high school in forty-five participating school districts in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania.
Lackawanna College’s Honors Program is designed for top academically ranked high school seniors in the region. The new Honors Program Scholarship offers full-tuition, for up to four years, for graduating high school students ranking in the top 10 in their high school class. Students ranked 11-20 in their class would receive half-tuition, for up to four years, with the opportunity to earn full scholarships based on financial need.
“Lackawanna College is this community’s college and we are continually looking for transformative ways to create opportunities for students in the region,” said President-Elect Jill A. Murray, Ph.D. “We want to reward these high-achieving local students and help them continue on their educational paths while staying close to home.”
This program is the first of its kind in the region and is positioned to be a transformational opportunity for both students and the community. It is the first time that an intentional, critical mass of these high achieving students from our region have been invited to one institution to complete their college education.
The Honors Program will provide not just scholarships but also comprehensive educational experiences that will prepare graduates to emerge as leaders ready to change the face of their communities. These educational experiences include leadership opportunities, meaningful immersive service to and in the community and an innovative experiential and challenging curricula.
“Abington Heights has worked closely with Lackawanna College in recent years to provide students the opportunity to choose innovative programs,” said Abington Heights Superintendent Mike Mahon, whose district is participating in the Honors Program. “Students in the Class of 2020 are facing unprecedented uncertainties with their plans for the future and we are grateful to Lackawanna College for its efforts to assist those students with these scholarships.”
