SCRANTON -Lackawanna College students attended the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida on June 21st through June 27th.

PBL is a national organization for college students with an interest in leadership and business.  Students promote excellence in academics and develop into today’s future business leaders.

The National Leadership Conference itself is full of various activities and competitions covering a wide range of subjects.  Designed to prepare the student for a successful role in future business careers, the National Leadership Conference utilizes objective testing and performance based testing in specific competitive events to determine the National Award winners.

Several students from Lackawanna College won national awards this year at the conference.

PBL Advisor and Special Programs Coordinator, Beverly O’Hora stated that “When students compete on a National level it gets very intense, the pressure is on!!  These students studied diligently and worked very hard to achieve success within their specific competitive event and were rewarded for their exceptional performance.  We are extremely proud of their successes!  It is a true reflection of the outstanding education our students receive here at Lackawanna College.”

The award winners are as follows:  Sean Flood, 1st Place Award in Contemporary Sports Issues.  Shawn Solomon, 7th Place Award in Computer Concepts.  Christine Housley also competed in the National Leadership Conference in Accounting Principles.  Christine attained a 2nd Place Award in Accounting Principles at the State Leadership Conference held in Gettysburg in April.

Associated with nearly a quarter million students over the competition series, PBL is organized to create a challenging environment at the national level for postsecondary students.  When students compete at the national level, it gets very serious.  Students have the option to compete individually or in a team.  Most of the competitions have two components including the Objective Tests which have a multiple choice section of about 100 questions and then the Performance Tests.
The students winning these competitions have joined the ranks of learned and intelligent minds.

Lackawanna College students continue in the tradition of receiving state and national awards as they represent Lackawanna College.  Among former PBL winners are Troy Aikman, former NFL quarterback, Ronnie Musgrove, former Mississippi State Governor, singer Johnny Mathis, and former First Lady Pat Nixon.  The participating Lackawanna alumni this year were winners, reaching full potential and motivated towards success!
