Naming the Mellow Theater

The newly restored performing arts facility was named The Mellow Theater to honor Senator Robert Mellow, a distinguished Lackawanna College alumnus who led the college's successful Capital Campaign.

"The Mellow Theater at Lackawanna College is a splendid facility," said Dr. Joseph M. Gnall, Chairman of Lackawanna College's Board of Trustees in announcing the designation. "The name provides a way for the College to express its gratitude for Senator Mellow's unstinting efforts in leading the successful capital campaign which funded the renovation of the theater and many other vital institutional projects.

"Senator Mellow has long been active in the college's affairs. Senator Mellow received an associate's degree from Lackawanna College before attending the University of Scranton and Bethel College in Tennessee. He was awarded the college's first honorary doctorate in 1994 and is a recipient of the institution's Seeley Medal for Distinguished Service to the College.

A resident of Peckville, Senator Mellow has accumulated an outstanding record of community and legislative service. He was first elected to the state senate from the 22nd Senatorial District in 1970 and is now serving a district-record eighth term. He is currently Democratic Floor Leader and previously served as President Pro Tem of the chamber.

Theater CrestHe is active in numerous organizations including the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Association, the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, the state and national societies of public accountants, the Elks, the Knights of Columbus and the Italian-American Democratic League.

In late 1995, Senator Mellow became chairperson of Lackawanna College's three-year capital campaign which sought to raise $3 million for institutional purposes including the renovation of the former Central High School building to serve as the college's main campus. The campaign surpassed its goal.

The logo for the new Mellow Theater was derived from the original grid work carvings in the theater.
