Lackawanna hires Bruce Thompson as head baseball coach
SCRANTON, Pa. – After completion of an exhaustive national search and reviewing more than 100 applications, Lackawanna College has hired Bruce Thompson of Sartell, Minn., as head coach of its successful baseball program, the institution announced today.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” Thompson said. “I know the program has had some great success. Last year, they won 33 games and played for a district championship. I know they’ve had players drafted or go on to four-year schools and get drafted. I know they’ve been doing things the right way.
“They’ve got a winning tradition, and I hope I can come in and keep that going.”
Thompson comes to the College after serving as an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. While at St. Cloud, he helped lead the Huskies to a 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship and NCAA Central Region runner-up finish. The 2015 Huskies had the best start to a season in school history, beginning 23-0 and contributing to the team’s 125-28 overall record during his tenure beginning in June 2012.
In addition to his outstanding record at St. Cloud, Thompson has also served as a head baseball coach for a local Minnesota Legion baseball team, an assistant varsity hockey coach at Sartell High School in Sartell, Minn., and an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Cloud Technical & Community College in St. Cloud, Minn.
Lackawanna College President Mark Volk said, “Bruce brings an exceptional amount of experience and talent to our program. He clearly understands the need to focus on both academics as well as athletics. Coach Thompson knows that our success goes well beyond the team’s win-loss record – we’re successful when we help our players meet their academic and baseball goals.”
Thompson has held various positions in higher education from St. Cloud State, Rasmussen College, and SCTCC along with experience with professional sports teams including the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team. Thompson said his experience as both an assistant coach, admissions counselor, and advisor prepared him to take the next step in his coaching career at Lackawanna.
“We are excited to have Bruce join our department,” Lackawanna College Athletic Director Kim Mecca added. “With his experience at the NCAA Division II level, he is sure to be an asset to our team and the Lackawanna College community. With Bruce at the helm of our baseball program, we are confident that he will continue to give our student-athletes the opportunity to succeed on and off the field.”
The Lackawanna Falcons baseball team has enjoyed a number of recent successes including, but certainly not limited to, their 2015 NJCAA Region XIX Division II title. Since 2009, current and past members of the Falcons baseball team have been selected five times in the Major League Draft. Earlier this year, 2014 graduate Rich Condeelis was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 36th round.
