PSY 228 Career Development and Guidance Course Objectives
As a result of this course the participants should be able to:

Assess Maslow’s self-actualization in the context of a life structure consisting of a blend of career and other life roles.

Describe the historical development of career counseling.

Describe selected theories of career choice, development, and decision making.

Appreciate the systemic factors that influence the course and development of an individual’s career and life.

Discuss the important role of self-concept or career identity in career development.

Understand and utilize standardized assessments in career guidance.

Identify and locate print and electronic career information.

Discuss the stages of development, developmental tasks, and career guidance strategies for elementary, middle school and high school students.

Identify and describe the career competencies developed by the National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee (NOICC) and develop lesson plans for selected grades or populations.

Understand the career guidance needs of special populations.

Develop a personal philosophy clarifying the appropriate role of education in developing an individual’s career.
