SS 132 Introduction to Psychology Course Objectives

An SS 132 student should be able to:

  1. Understand psychology as a science and identify its major fields of study.
  2. Explain how the nervous system, endocrine system, and heredity each affect behavior.
  3. Describe the process of sensation and perception and their effect on human behavior.
  4. Describe the stages of sleep and concepts of how drugs affect consciousness and behavior.
  5. Understand the theories of human development as they apply to pre-natal development, physical growth, language, cognition, adulthood, and aging.
  6. Describe the theories of memory and forgetting and how they relate to improved study habits.
  7. Explain the theories of intelligence to include the roles of heredity and environment.
  8. Discuss the theories of motivation and emotion.
  9. Use the theories of personality to describe individual uniqueness.
  10. Understand the causes of stress and the methods of adaptation, particularly defense mechanisms.
  11. Describe the syndromes of presented anxiety and affect disorders.
  12. Apply the results of the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator to better understand one’s personal, interpersonal, and teamwork style.
