PHL 120 Meta-Ethics Course Objectives 

Students in SS 122 will:

  1. Become familiar with ethical theories developed by ancient Greek thinkers, including cynicism, stoicism, and Epicureanism.
  2. Differentiate among the ethical teachings of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
  3. Study medieval philosophers and assess the impact of Christianity and classical philosophy on their ethical thinking.
  4. Review the approaches to ethical questions taken by early modern thinkers, such as Hume, Kant, and Hobbes.
  5. Discuss the very different ethical emphases of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard.
  6. Conclude with a review of Marxist, Utilitarian, and Existentialist ethical positions.
