Sport Management Career Plan

Objectives

Sport Management students will:

  1. Prepare for a career in sport management by learning fundamental management theories and case studies that illustrate their application.
  2. Become familiar with the financial reporting and tracking systems most commonly utilized in the sports/entertainment industry today.
  3. Be introduced to sport promotion, advertising, and marketing through textbook study, field trips, and team projects.
  4. Develop technical knowledge and skills through study of management information systems, macro-economics, and statistics.
  5. Become acquainted with the historical, cultural, and sociological factors underlying the evolution of organized sports in the United States and other parts of the world.
  6. Be able to apply general sport management principles and techniques in real-world settings through simulations and projects related to event planning, promotion, staffing, scheduling, and hosting.

Degree Information

The "Sport Management" track offers coursework for the student interested in sport and recreation careers in the private/commercial sector, public recreation and park agencies, and corporate/industrial settings. Students completing this program will be qualified to seek employment in a recreational setting or to transfer the degree into a four-year sport and recreational management program

Course Descriptions

MG 111 - Principles of Management
This is an introductory management course that tries to stimulate the student to develop a basic understanding of management, its practices and its techniques. It also allows the student to become familiar with concepts and terminology that will be useful in many managerial situations (3 Credits).

MG 117 - Introduction to Sport Management
MG 117 is a survey course that offers the student a look at the diverse and expanding field of sport and recreation. The areas of professional, educational and commercial sport, and recreation and special events are surveyed, identifying the general structure and function of each. Emphasis is given as to skills necessary for the entry into the field and opportunities that exist (3 Credits). Click here to view MG 117 course objectives.

MG214 – Sport in American Society
This course is designed to provide basic understanding of the central historical developments and social processes that explain the widely popular yet disparate sporting experience of Americans today. While considerable emphasis is given to socialization and stratification issues, the course also considers the relationship of sport and recreation to media, ethics, economics, and politics (3 Credits). MG 220 – Program Planning
The purpose of Program Planning is to provide students with a good understanding of programming and planning for recreational sports. Students should come away form this class with a thorough understanding of the sport/event marketing and promotions, scheduling, staffing, and facility management.
