LA 210 Family Law Course Objectives:

The students will learn:

  1. How a divorce or annulment may be obtained, including the following:
    • The various types of divorces, including fault divorces, consensual no-fault divorces and non-consensual no-fault divorces;
    • The manner in which a legal annulment as opposed to a religious annulment is obtained;
    • The various legal considerations involved with equitable distribution, including the following:
    • Whether the property is marital property or non-marital property; and
    • How the property should be divided.
  2. How custody cases are handled with an emphasis on:
    • Legal custody; and
    • Physical custody - different aspects of physical custody, including partial custody, shared custody and primary custody arrangements, will be examined.  Also, the different aspects of visitation schedules will be examined.
  3. Different aspects of support will be discussed, including child support, spousal support, alimony pendente lite, and alimony.
  4. The various aspects of the protection from abuse laws will be discussed.  The student will learn how the protection from abuse process works.
  5. The rights of unmarried couples will also be explored in the present course.
  6. The manner in which families function and the unique problems which occur, thereby causing divorce.
  7. How the divorce process works.
