LA 210 Family Law Course Objectives:
The students will learn:
- How a divorce or annulment may be obtained, including the following:
- The various types of divorces, including fault divorces, consensual no-fault divorces and non-consensual no-fault divorces;
- The manner in which a legal annulment as opposed to a religious annulment is obtained;
- The various legal considerations involved with equitable distribution, including the following:
- Whether the property is marital property or non-marital property; and
- How the property should be divided.
- How custody cases are handled with an emphasis on:
- Legal custody; and
- Physical custody - different aspects of physical custody, including partial custody, shared custody and primary custody arrangements, will be examined. Also, the different aspects of visitation schedules will be examined.
- Different aspects of support will be discussed, including child support, spousal support, alimony pendente lite, and alimony.
- The various aspects of the protection from abuse laws will be discussed. The student will learn how the protection from abuse process works.
- The rights of unmarried couples will also be explored in the present course.
- The manner in which families function and the unique problems which occur, thereby causing divorce.
- How the divorce process works.
