LA 145 Criminal Law Course Objectives:

The student will learn:

  1. The nature of crime:
    • The elements of a crime;
    • The reasons for crime;
    • Classifications of crimes; and
    • Different types of crimes, including the theft crimes and the defenses thereto.
  2. The different aspects of criminal procedure, including:
    • The criminal law process;
    • How to prepare the various documents required in order to complete the criminal law process;
    • The constitutional safeguards, which constitute the main portion of criminal procedure, including but not limited to:
      • The Fourth Amendment, guaranteeing protection from unreasonable search and seizures, and the First Amendment requirement that no warrants for search or an arrest can be issued without probable cause;
      • The Fifth Amendment and the protections involving due process and double jeopardy;
      • The Sixth Amendment and the guarantee to a speedy trial, right to confront a witness and right to a lawyer;
      • The Eighth Amendment, prohibiting excessive bails and cruel and unusual punishment.
  3. What constitutes computer crime and white collar crime, such as bankruptcy fraud.
