LA 124 Introduction to Paralegal Studies Course Objectives:

Students in LA 124 will learn:

  1. What a paralegal is and does.
  2. Why and how legal professionals are regulated and what ethical rules they must follow.
  3. The meaning and importance of constitutional law, statutory law, administrative law and case law.
  4. The organization of the court system and ways in which disputes can be resolved outside the court system.
  5. The purpose of substantive areas of law, including torts, crimes, contracts, property, estates and business organizations.
  6. Basic steps in the litigation process and tasks that may be required of paralegals during each phase.
  7. How to conduct basic legal research.
