IS 100 Introduction to Computer Applications Course Objectives
An IS 100 student should be able:
- To gain hands-on practice with Windows XP using Windows Explorer.
- To create, design, and produce professional documents using word processing software (Word). Functions include design options for formatting and layout and strategies for working with multiple documents.
- To process, manipulate, and represent numeric data using spreadsheet software (Excel). Functions include techniques for preparing and formatting an Excel Worksheet, creating formulas, and using multiple worksheets.
- Plan, structure, and create databases for efficient data access and retrieval using database software (Access). Functions include search and sort capabilities for extracting data, data retrieval commands, and techniques for record specification.
- To complete end-of-chapter assignments without instructor direction using Microsoft Office 2003; to reinforce acquired technical skills while providing practice in decision-making and problem solving.
- To prepare a written summary report on a current computer topic of the students choosing, thus emphasizing a students communication skills.
- To gain keyboarding competency (minimum of 20 wpm) by independently completing lessons with a computer-based software package. Once the student becomes familiar with the typing program, he/she may practice anytime a lab is available. However, the typing test must be taken when the instructor is present. To prepare students for the Microsoft Office User Specialist core test in Word, Excel and Access.
