EN 240 Masterworks of World Literature Course Objectives:

Students in EN 240 will:

  1. Read representative selections from modern Western literature, including works by Racine, Wordsworth, Lorca, Dostoevsky, and Frederick Douglas.
  2. Place the literary works just cited within their cultural and historical context.
  3. Supplement these texts and authors with literary selections from non-Western traditions, including Oriental and Latin American sources.
  4. Place non-Western writings within their own political and cultural context. 
  5. Undertake comparative analyses of plotting, characterization, development of themes, and so on in Western and non-Western works.
  6. Highlight the main conclusions emerging from comparative studies and show how important cultural differences still are in contemporary world affairs.
