EN 231 Survey of American Literature to 1900 Course Objectives
- To read, analyze, and understand important texts of American literature.
- To write personal analyses and notes on observations regarding styles, content, and connections to other texts.
- To deliver a 5-7 minute oral presentation to the class regarding a pre-approved topic related to a course text. The student will present valid research, create and distribute a visual aid for classmates, provide source information, and answer classmates questions regarding content. The presenter may use notes but must present extemporaneously.
- To write a fully documented essay in MLA style on an approved topic related to American literature.
- To identify and explain the historical, cultural, and literary connections between texts.
- To identify the roles of religion, government, nature, and other forces as they relate to American literature.
- To compose coherent, well-written essays in in-class exams.
- To work collaboratively with other students to develop original hypotheses about American Literature.
- To utilize sources, as necessary and required, for supplementing understanding of texts.
