EN 231 Survey of American Literature to 1900 Course Objectives

  1. To read, analyze, and understand important texts of American literature.
  2. To write personal analyses and notes on observations regarding styles, content, and connections to other texts.
  3. To deliver a 5-7 minute oral presentation to the class regarding a pre-approved topic related to a course text. The student will present valid research, create and distribute a visual aid for classmates, provide source information, and answer classmates’ questions regarding content. The presenter may use notes but must present extemporaneously.
  4. To write a fully documented essay in MLA style on an approved topic related to American literature.
  5. To identify and explain the historical, cultural, and literary connections between texts.
  6. To identify the roles of religion, government, nature, and other forces as they relate to American literature.
  7. To compose coherent, well-written essays in in-class exams.
  8. To work collaboratively with other students to develop original hypotheses about American Literature.
  9. To utilize sources, as necessary and required, for supplementing understanding of texts.
