ENG103 Critical Reading Course Objectives

  1. Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues.
  2. Identify the main idea and supporting details of paragraphs and longer passages (articles, chapters, newspapers) at a college reading level.
  3. Summarize and outline material.
  4. Recognize patterns of organization in reading material.
  5. Draw conclusions from written material based on knowledge, experience, logic, and awareness of writing technique.
  6. Distinguish fact from opinion.
  7. Recognize author’s purpose and understand bias.
  8. Evaluate arguments and determine if support is adequate and relevant.
  9. Evaluate web sites for purpose, source and accuracy.
