COM 225 Advanced Public Speaking Course Objectives

In COM 225, students will be

  • acquiring an advanced understanding of public speaking delivery skills and use them when presenting.
  • developing advanced knowledge on how to use language to maximize presentation speaking skills.
  • learning to understand their own public speaking strengths and weaknesses.
  • effectively using stories and metaphors in public speeches.
  • utilizing multi-media software in public speaking presentations.
  • understanding the listening process and knowing that “effective speaking” depends on “effective listening”.
  • practicing the “fundamental principles” of speech preparation and organization:
    • Finding a subject
    • Determining speech purposes
    • Framing thesis statements
    • Developing content
    • Arranging ideas coherently
    • Outlining
  • demonstrating knowledge and mastery of reasoning, motivating and refuting in the development and delivery of a persuasive speech.
  • increasing self-confidence in oral communication through knowledge acquisition and skill mastery.
