COM 205 Journalism I Course Objectives
In COM 205, students will be
- developing basic newswriting skills working toward a professional career in journalism.
- examining the writing process and include guidelines for good writing, grammar, punctuation, bias, sources, databases, editing as part of writing, the Internet, and different types of word usage.
- becoming more sensitive to language and increasing awareness of stereotypes.
- able to demonstrate to students how to evaluate their own writing as well as their classmates'.
- able to discuss the Internet and its effect on mass communication and discuss writing for the Internet to better prepare students for the different media in which they may work.
- gaining a better understanding of professional resources on the Internet.
- participating in the creation of the College's own news publication.
- articulating a greater understanding of the reciprocal nature of media and culture.
- furthering skills in critical thinking by providing an assortment of theories and arguments and the opportunity to apply them to specific and concrete examples and observations.
- becoming involved in their academic and local communities.
- able to demonstrate effective research and information management skills.
- able to demonstrate perseverance and learn from mistakes as students self-direct life-long learning.
- utilizing various forms of print and electronic references, evaluating each of these for logic, validity, and reliability.
