COM 105 Introduction to Mass Media Course Objectives 

In COM 105 students will be

  • introduced to a number of media outlets.
  • familiarized with the various goals of different media organizations.
  • acquainted with the past and present technologies used in media.
  • examining the history of media and its contributions to society.
  • critiquing and analyzing the objectives of today’s media.
  • developing skills used in media today, such as public relations, broadcasting, advertising, and journalism techniques.
  • broadening their knowledge about current events, both local and national.
  • allowed hands-on experience in the media field.
  • knowledgeable about information for various occupations in the media field.
  • furthering their skills in critical thinking by providing an assortment of theories and arguments and the opportunity to apply them to specific and concrete examples and observations.
  • involved in their academic and local communities.
  • able to demonstrate effective research and information management skills.
  • utilizing various forms of print and electronic references, evaluating each of these for logic, validity, and reliability.
  • composing in an electronic environment and using the resources of word
  • processing software to improve writing.
  • composing work to be included in Student Credential Portfolios.
