CJS 225 Firearms and Police Combat Situations Course Objectives

A CJS 225 student should be able:

  1. To provide the student with a historical background of the role of firearms in the culture of the United States, with an emphasis on their applications in police work and law enforcement
  2. To acquaint the student with historical and modern day firearms, the respective nomenclature and their police related usage.
  3. To present to the student the safety rules and regulations for the handling, storage and use of firearms. This includes related equipment such as holsters and gun locks. The structure, use and management of private and law enforcement firearm ranges will also be presented.
  4. To acquaint the student with current legislation concerning firearms and their use. The student will explore the criminal and civil liability associated with the use of firearms by law enforcement and in civilian life.
  5. To provide the student with a safe and structured exposure to a live fire “police style” firearm range. The student will also be exposed to tactical training and considerations applied within real-life police situations.
  6. To introduce the student to current firearm training techniques utilized by police trainers.
