CHM 120/121 General Chemistry I Course Objectives:

  1. To learn to think like a chemist through theoretical and applied problem-solving activities involving qualitative and quantitative approaches.
  2. To appreciate the nature of the major areas of general chemistry, including physical principles, inorganic compounds, analytical techniques, organic chemistry, and aspects of biochemistry, and their integration.
  3. To explore how atoms and molecules are arranged in matter, their relative amounts, how they react, their energy patterns, and how they are held together.
  4. To provide opportunities for students to explore chemistry using the scientific method through hands-on activities in a chemical laboratory environment, and to be aware of and appreciate laboratory safety guidelines and procedures.
  5. To prepare students for future sciences courses in biology and chemistry and for future careers in the sciences.
