Academic Suspension

Adopted 7/2005, effective Fall 2005 semester

A student on Academic Probation whose cumulative quality point index falls below the College's minimum progress requirements will be suspended.  If a suspended student believes that extenuating circumstances contributed to academic difficulties during a particular semester, he/she may appeal the suspension to the Academic Dean of the College.  In order to be considered, an appeal to the Academic Dean must be submitted within five calendar days of receipt of the letter of suspension.  The appeal must be in the form of a letter to the Academic Dean, citing reasons for consideration.

A suspended student may continue their enrollment and attendance in Summer or Intersession semesters subsequent to their semester of academic suspension.  Regardless of academic outcome however, the student will not be permitted to attend the subsequent full (Fall or Spring) semester.  If pre-registered for the subsequent full (Fall or Spring) semester, the student will be withdrawn by the Office of the Registrar.

A student who has been placed on academic suspension may apply for re-admission to the College at the conclusion of the final grading period of the full semester (Fall or Spring) following the semester of the student's academic suspension.  In order to be readmitted, the student must submit a letter requesting readmission to the Academic Dean.  If approval is secured, a corresponding form will be completed, and through its distribution the Academic Dean will notify the offices of the Registrar, Student Affairs, Business, and Financial Aid of the reinstatement.  Additionally, if the student has been absent for a year or more, upon reinstatement approval by the Academic Dean, they must reapply at the college's Admissions office, and conform to any applicable program updates.

After readmission, the suspended student will remain on probation for the subsequent semester, and until all specified academic criteria for progress have been met.  Should any readmitted student's GPA once again fall below minimum progress requirements, he/she will be placed on permanent suspension and will be denied further reinstatement.

In administering government-supported aid programs, the Financial Aid Director adheres to federal regulations regarding satisfactory academic progress.  The specific guidelines are explained in the Financial Aid Handbook published by the Financial Aid Office and available to anyone upon request.  It is the responsibility of each student to review these guidelines to ensure individual compliance for the renewal of financial aid.

Provisional Student Policy
January 2006

Students who are required to take all three developmental courses are admitted as Provisional students. Full-time Provisional students are required to complete the three developmental courses: Reading for College, Basic Writing and Basic Math as well as College Study Skills, Introduction to Computer Applications and the required one credit course, The Freshman Experience, during the first semester before registering for other major specific courses. Provisional students are required to participate in the Mentoring Program –“STEEL” – Success Through Education, Encouragement and Leadership for two full semesters. Provisional status results in a review of a student’s academic progress at the end of his/her first full-time (12 credits or more) semester. Full-time Provisional students not achieving a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 1.85 at the end of the first semester will not be allowed to attend for the subsequent semester.

  • Students who do not complete the entire 16 credit provisional semester will remain on Provisional status with the 1.85 GPA requirement remaining in effect until the completion of their second semester.
  • Any student who has been academically suspended may request a review of the suspension decision within 5 calendar days of receipt of suspension. The request must be in the form of a letter to the Academic Development Division Chair citing reasons for consideration. The student must secure the approval of the Academic Development Division Chair before the Academic Dean grants final approval.
  • Any student who has been academically suspended may request readmission at the conclusion of the final grading period following the semester of dismissal. The request must be in the form of a letter to the Academic Development Division Chair citing reasons for consideration. The student must secure the approval of the Academic Development Division Chair before the Academic Dean grants final approval. The Academic Dean will notify the Academic Development Department, Student Affairs, Business Office, Registrar’s Office and the Financial Aid Office in the event of reinstatement.
  • Any student who has been academically suspended must complete at least three college credits before he/she can be re enrolled. Course/s may be taken during the summer/intersession at the College, through the College’s Continuing Education department, or at a local community college.
