Dorm Residence Move In Guide

Furnished Items

  • Desk and chair
  • Bed (extra long twin bedding required) with two drawers underneath for storage.
  • Standing closet
  • Lockable security box for valuables. Student must provide own lock.
  • Internet connection.
  • Cable TV connection (1 per room, splitter required for multiple TV’s)
  • Coin-operated laundry facilities are provided in a community room.
  • Community microwaves are available for student use.

Recommendations/Requirements for Dorm Living:

  • No carpeting is provided. Residents are allowed to bring a carpet no larger than 30 inches by 60 inches for their personal space. For safety reasons, all rugs or carpets must have a non-slip (rubber) backing (no rattan rugs, horsehair mats, straw mats, etc.). If all roommates agree, members of a room may use an area rug.
  • Because of a shortage of space in the residence halls, storage is not available. Privately owned storage facilities are located in the surrounding area. College furniture must remain in a resident's room. It cannot be stored elsewhere in the building, nor can it be removed from the building.
  • Because our beds are built with additional storage underneath them, bunking them is impractical and extremely dangerous. The furniture provided cannot be removed from the room; therefore there is no room or need to construct a loft.
  • Mattresses must remain on the bed frame which, in turn, must remain on floor.
  • Students are not allowed to paint their rooms.
  • Each student is allowed to bring his/her own refrigerator (no larger than 4.3 cubic feet).
  • Stereo equipment, televisions, radios, personal computers, hair dryers, electric razors, and alarm clocks are permitted. These devices may not exceed the amperage limits of the circuits in the rooms.
  • The use of a surge/noise suppression outlet strip to protect computers and other electrically sensitive equipment and the use of a UL-listed multiple outlet power strip with a built-in 15 amp fuse or circuit breaker are strongly recommended.
  • Due to fire safety requirements, cooking in any area of the residence hall, except the common area, is prohibited. Therefore, residents are not allowed to have any type of cooking appliance in their rooms.

Room Care and Decorations

Students are expected to keep their rooms clean and to cooperate in keeping hallways and bath areas in satisfactory condition. Nothing can be removed or added to rooms without permission of the Director of Housing and Residence Life. The College provides cleaning service for common areas only.

The following restrictions also apply:

  • Any objects such as decals, pictures, stickers, etc. that are fastened to the walls, doors, woodwork or ceilings of rooms or hallways must be removable without damage to paint or furnished surfaces of the room.
  • No decals, pictures, signs, posters, or other items visible from outside shall be attached or placed next to windows. Contact paper is forbidden, as are cellophane, tape and heavy packaging tape.
  • Writing instruments must not be used on any building surfaces.
  • Students must not decorate their rooms with combustible materials, or be in possession of incense, candles, or other flammable items
  • Residents will be held responsible for any damage done to their rooms or any part of the residence hall and its equipment. Unaccountable damage will be billed to all residents of a particular living area at the time that it occurs. The cost will be equally divided among all residents in that area.

Confiscation Policy – Routine room inspections will be conducted by designated College employees for health, safety and maintenance reasons. All prohibited items will be confiscated, labeled and held until the end of the semester. Any unclaimed items will be disposed of after the final date for departure from the dormitory. Possession of prohibited items is a fineable offense, and repeated violation of policy will result in further sanctions, including but not limited to dismissal from College.

* SMOKING*: Smoking, including use of smokeless tobacco, is prohibited on all College property. There are no designated smoking areas on campus, and students in violation of this policy are subject to disciplinary action.

Please note: At orientation, each resident will receive a current copy of the Residence Life Handbook. These policies, as well as other policies and procedures, will be covered in greater detail there. This move-in guide is not intended to be, nor should it be interpreted as, a comprehensive policy document. Its only purpose is to ease the transition from home life to college life.

Information on overnight accommodations in the area can be found on the Lackawanna County Convention and Visitors Bureau website, www.visitnepa.org.
