Training Institute

For the past 18 years Lackawanna College has been working with the Career Links, local companies and the Chamber in order to provide area industry with applicants that not only meet the skill levels required for today’s jobs, but also the “soft skills” that are essential to meeting the demands of the future. The result of this work has culminated in the creation of the Lackawanna College Employment Training Institute and the creation of the FIRST program. The Institute is an industry driven education program.

The mission of the Institute and the “FIRST” program is to offer a competitive pre-employment training program that provides employers with a pool of certified applicants who are capable of meeting the demands of a quality work team environment in a global economy, while building a standard for life-long learning. The program consists of 115 hours of instruction in the areas of communications, math, safety and health, personal development, quality, teamwork, technology and plant torus.

The Employment Institute allows the College to better serve the needs of the local community by increasing the college’s ability to offer training in an on site, dedicated facility. Courses can be offered day, evening or on weekends. Training programs can be canned courses such as basic computer skills or courses designed specifically to meet the needs of a particular company.

The goal of the Training Institute is to offer a competitive pre-employment training program that provides employers with a pool of certified applicants who are capable of meeting the demands of a quality work team environment in a global economy while building a standard for life long learning.
Pre-Employment Training is available through the Institute and includes introduction to technical math, communication skills, teambuilding, personal development, health and safety and quality assurance.

Additional courses, such as Health Insurance Privacy and Portability Act (HIPA) training, computer training, keyboarding and fundamentals of accounting, can be created or existing courses adapted to meet the specific requirements of an individual company or program. Courses can be conducted at the college or on site at the company’s facility.
