EMS Academy
Lackawanna College is accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. The Paramedic Training Institute offers day and evening programs which provide comprehensive instruction including Paramedic and other Emergency Medical Service Education. Students learn to provide critical pre-hospital care to ill or injured patients; to master skills essential to the coordination and management of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) systems; and to interact effectively with health care professionals.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system. Educational Requirements: One of the eligibility requirements for licensure at this level requires successful completion of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician course.

Paramedic
The Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Paramedics perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance.
The Paramedic is a link from the scene into the health care system. Educational Requirements: Because of the amount of complex decision making, one of the eligibility requirements for licensure requires successful completion of a nationally accredited Paramedic program at the certificate or associates degree level.
