HISTORY:
Whether you want to enter the world of health care as a Nurse Aide or you want to experience the health care profession before entering a nursing program, the Lackawanna College Nurse Aide Training Program is for you.
The Lackawanna College Nurse Aide Training Program began in July, 2006 with three students. To date 200 students in 33 classes have successfully completed the program.
This course provides the training for a non-licensed individual to provide safe, effective, and competent caring services to residents in long term care facilities, patients in hospital settings and clients at home. Areas of instruction will include an introduction to health care, basic nursing skills, CPR, communications skills, resident’s rights, infection control, nutrition, body systems, common diseases, death and dying, and intervention strategies
GENERAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision and direction of Registered Nurses who are experienced in long-term care, the Lackawanna College Nurse Aide Training Program is an eight week, 200 hour program with hands-on, supervised clinical experience.
The program is accredited by the Pennsylvania State Department of Education for 148 hours which includes 93 hours classroom/laboratory training and 55 clinical hours in a long-term care facility.
The program offers 52 additional specialized hours that includes training in CPR, tours in local long term facilities to assist with employment opportunities and practice laboratory hours to prepare the student to take the American Red Cross Competency Examination.
Upon successful completion of all components of the course, the student will receive a certificate of completion from the Lackawanna College Nurse Aide Training Program and will be eligible to take the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Competency Examination as given by the American Red Cross.
Upon passing these examinations, your name is placed on the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry.
PROGRAM HOURS:
Classroom/Laboratory: Monday Thru Friday - 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Clinical: 55 hours
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
Clinical requirements include 55 hours in a long-term care facility under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
FACULTY:
The program is taught by one full-time and one part-time faculty members. Both faculty members are Registered Nurses with experience in long-term care and have successfully completed the Train The Educator Program. The faculty to student ratio never exceeds 10:1
ENROLLMENT :
Ten students per class are allowed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
ADMISSION:
Applicants must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language with proficiency at a ninth grade level.
Complete the Verification of PA Residency form.
Provide two forms of official, signature-bearing identification (one of which must be a current photo identification document). Examples of proper identification include: Driver’s license, Passport, Clinic card, Library card, Credit card, or State- issued identification card.
PA Criminal History Background check will be done before the first day of class and must be in compliance and free of Prohibitive Offenses as cited in Act 14.
FBI background check if applicable must be free of Prohibitive Offenses as cited in Act 14.
Physical examination is required and must include: Evidence that applicant is free from any communicable diseases and current with immunizations; in good health, has full use of hands, has the ability to stand for extensive periods, bend, pull, push, and lift a minimum of 50 pounds to waist height without restrictions.
Documentation of a negative 2-step PPD that is dated within 6 months of starting class. If PPD is documented as positive, a negative chest x-ray report, less than five years old, must be submitted.
Proof of a High School Diploma or GED
OUTCOMES:
A three year average shows 92% of students admitted to the program have passed all requirements and 100% of all students completing the program have passed the American Red Cross Examination for placement on the Nurse Aide Registry.
