The “FIRST” Program
(Facilitating Industry Rated Standards of Training)

For the past ten years Lackawanna College has been working with the Career Links, local companies and the Chamber in order to provide area industry with applicants that not only meet the skill levels required for today's jobs, but also the "soft skills" that are essential to meeting the demands of the future. The result of this work has culminated in the creation of the Lackawanna College Training Institute and the creation of the FIRST program. The Institute is an industry driven education program.

The mission of the Institute and the “FIRST” program is to offer a competitive pre-employment training program that provides employers with a pool of certified applicants who are capable of meeting the demands of a quality work team environment in a global economy while building a standard for life-long learning. The program consists of 115 hours of instruction in the areas of communications, math, safety and health, personal development, quality, teamwork, technology and plant tours.

The initial year of the program is being funded by a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).

It is the hope of Lackawanna College that local companies will see the need for such an institute and assist the college by becoming partners in the Institute through yearly membership fees and continued input as members of a consortium.

Several benefits that can be realized from participation in the Institute are:

* Job placements are quicker and less costly.
* Hiring employees with FIRST training can require less on-the-job training of many soft skills and a higher retention rate.
* Similar training institutes have reported that over a five year period companies have saved $2.975 million in training costs. Annual wages created total $33.8 million.
* And finally, business, education and government can successfully work together for the betterment of our community.
