Youth Programs


"The After School Learning Center" for the Remediation
and Academic Assistance of Youth Ages 14-18

Lackawanna College in cooperation with Lackawanna County Workforce Investment Youth Council has opened a free After School Learning Center. The Center is free to all income eligible individuals. 

The Learning Center is staffed by certified teachers and serves students ages 14 – 18. 

The Center is open every Monday through Thursday from 3:15 – 5:30 p.m. during the school year (with the exception of school holidays). Summer programs run Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm.

The Center is open to eligible students between the ages of 14-18.

The purpose of the Center is to assist students in completing homework assignments, offer remedial instruction in Reading, English and Math. It introduces students to career information, and instructs students in the use of the Internet as a tool to help with schoolwork.

 

CURRICULUM

Introduction to Computers will cover a general overview of the computer, as well as, a hands-on experience working with Microsoft Office, Windows, programming, installing software and playing educational games.

Advanced Computers will cover word processing/Desktop Publishing, creating flyers and importing graphics. Personal skills sections are designed to help students develop educational direction and improve personal social skills.

Remediation Instruction in Reading, writing and math will be taught through the use of one-on-one instruction and small group instruction.  Topics to be covered include:  Vocabulary, word attack skills, order of events, literal/inferential comprehension, direction following, fact/opinion, drawing conclusions, forming simple sentences, spelling, organization of ideas, parts of speech, survival skills and punctuation, and basic math concepts ranging from addition and subtraction to basic algebra.

Career Planning will be addressed through small group activities and the use of the Internet.

Study Skills topics such as note taking, listening, test taking and organization skills will be taught.
