An Overview of Lackawanna College

Lackawanna College President
We have changed our name to Lackawanna College to better reflect the reality of the institution today. Over our 107-year history, Lackawanna College has gone from manual typewriters to high speed computers, from secretarial courses to biotechnology studies. Today, Lackawanna College provides a vast spectrum of educational offerings. The title "junior college" had become too restrictive to encompass the present status of the College or to express the potential in our future.
Lackawanna College is devoted to its role of creating educational opportunities for generations of students and residents. Our open admissions policy affords everyone a chance. We are proud of the success rate of our graduates and the preparation that the College provides to enable them to achieve. There will be new programs that we will introduce and new challenges that we will resolve to meet. With our new name and status with the state, the College is in a vastly better position to respond to the future's demands.
However, there are certain consistent features about our College under any name that we will retain. These include dedicated faculty, small classes, personal attention and thoughtful counseling. Changing our name to Lackawanna College won't change our quality or our character.
I hope you will join us as we welcome the promise of tomorrow.
Lackawanna College offers a pathway to success and satisfaction. For over 100 years, the College has been providing quality education for individuals seeking to make the most of their lives.
Through a combination of outstanding academic programs, dedicated faculty, small classes, personal attention and thoughtful counseling, Lackawanna College can supply you with the opportunity to attain your maximum potential.
Lackawanna College was founded in 1894 as the Scranton Business College. Through the years, the College has grown and expanded to meet the changing needs of the community and of individual students. Lackawanna College is chartered as a non-profit junior college with the right to grant associate degrees and is fully accredited by the prestigious Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges. Its credits are easily transferable to other colleges and universities.
Lackawanna College is an urban school with its main campus in Scranton and centers in Hazleton, Honesdale and Towanda. The College's main campus in downtown Scranton, which opened in 1996, combines distinctive architecture with modern technology and contains the elegant 1048-seat Mellow Theater.
Lackawanna College is large enough to offer you the courses you require, yet small enough to keep you from being lost in a crowd. The College has an enrollment of approximately 1000 students seeking degrees and offers both day and evening programs. Many more students take part every year in Continuing Education courses and certificate programs.
In addition to its academic programs, Lackawanna College operates academies, which teach the subjects vital to certain professions. For example, Lackawanna College's Police Academy provides the comprehensive training that Pennsylvania requires for an individual to be certified as a municipal police officer. Other Lackawanna College academies specialize in Banking, Government and Paramedic Training.
The academic year is divided into a fall semester, intersession, spring semester and a summer session. About half of Lackawanna College's graduates transfer directly upon graduation to a four-year college or university to continue their education.
Lackawanna College grants associate in science, associate in applied science and associate in arts degrees in a variety of majors and offers certificate programs designed specifically to suit the needs of an individual. Most students are required to take core curriculum courses including English, math, humanities, social sciences and computer information.
