Jerry Santorsa
Head Softball Coach

Jerry Santorsa, a former high school girl's softball coach who remains active in the sport as a player and consultant, has been appointed head women's softball coach at Lackawanna College. "I think this is a great opportunity for me," said Santorsa, a North Scranton resident. "Lackawanna College's women's softball program speaks for itself," Santorsa added. "It's a first-rate program. I'm looking forward to continuing the success. I'm thrilled to be coaching there." Santorsa is a 1964 graduate of Holy Rosary High School, where he participated in baseball. He passed up a college baseball scholarship for personal reasons and eventually became a softball coach.

He was head softball coach at Mid Valley High School from 1988 to 1992 during which time he led the Spartanettes to five Lackawanna League and two PIAA District 2 championships.

Fifteen years ago Santorsa and John Litzy, an Old Forge resident, founded the Northeast Stars, an AAU-type program that provides softball competition for females between the ages of 12 and 18.

The Northeast Stars' 18-and-under team won the National Association of Sportsmen's Federation championship in 1997 under Santorsa and Litzy.

Santorsa's most recent involvement as a softball coach was at Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus, where he served for three years ending with the 2002 season. Santorsa, who is self-employed in Scranton, also coached in the Miss-E Softball program.

Samantha Pientack Receives All-American Recognition

Samantha Pientack enrolled at Lackawanna College last fall bringing with her some very impressive softball credentials. While at Valley View High School, she was named All Regional Catcher and First-Team All-Star in her junior year and senior year, and a reputation for hitting the long ball.
This spring she lived up to that reputation. She batted .519 with 21 home runs and 65 RBIs. Truly amazing was the fact that of her 55 hits, 31 were for extra bases. Pientack ended the season with a remarkable 1.217 slugging percentage. Her on-base percentage of .641 meant that she failed to reach first base only 3 1/2 times for every 10 times she came to the plate.
Pientack’s numbers ranked sixth in NJCAA Division II individual hitting, third in homeruns nineteenth in runs batted in, and fourth in on-base percentage. In Region XIX, Pientack ranked first in individual hitting and homeruns, and second in RBIs and on-base percentage.
In recognition for her performance, Pientack joined four of her teammates, April Antione Tunkhannock Area) , Kristen Hummel, Heather Dale (Hazelton Area) and Carissa Iyoob (Valley View) in being named to the All Region Division II First Team. In addition, she was voted by opposing coaches the Region’s number one Division II player.
Finally, she concluded her freshman year at Lackawanna College by being recognized nationally as the NJCAA Division II Second Team All-American Catcher.
