08/05/09 -Q&A with Assistant Coach Raru Archer
Who will you miss the most from last years roster?
I will probbly miss Eli Daniel because he's a player who was easy going and never gave any problems. For a young coach you want to coach a guy who comes in the gym ready to work and get better.

What game sticks out in your mind from last season?
The game that sticks out is the Miami Dade game. Although we came up short we played well enough to win and I think that's how I knew our team was going to be special. We didn't back down from those guys and I think from that point our team got the confidence to go out every game time and compete

What is your impression on the changes to the arena?
The charges are an upgrade from this past season. The lighting in the facilities are brighter and the seating is awesome. We have brand new basketball goals with the NBA style shot clock light.

What practice drill did you enjoy the most from last season’s practices?
There were a several drills that I like but the one that I like the most would had to been shell drill. For starters I'm not to sure how many teams do this everyday. But for our team it played a major role in why our success was so great, go Falcons!

What summer basketball camp or tournament impressed you the most during July?
I actually enjoyed the great American shootout in Denton, tx. It was a great opportunity to see some of the nations top players from the southern region. It was also a great place to meet division 1 coaches from the highest and lowest levels. That tournament is intense it's like over 300 teams.

What NBA player will have a breakout season in 2010?
I believe Daren Williams who plays for Utah jazz will have a MVP type season. He finished up really well last season after playing for the gold metal winning team USA. I'm not sure if he can carry the Jazz to the promise but he's individual stats will be pretty darn good.

Thursday came the first test as the team drove across the state to play Hillsborough CC at their Tampa campus. Hillsborough had been a nationally ranked Division 1 program in previous years and have a roster full of talented players. Lackawanna played tough early and had the lead at the half by one. Hillsborough built a 12 point lead as Faisel Aden came out hot, scoring 16 of his game high 30 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Falcons turned up the heat and chipped away at the deficit and took a 2 point lead with 2 minutes to play. The pressure forced Hillsborough into tough shots late in the shot-clock and they would not score in the final minute as Lackawanna sealed their first road victory of the season 80-76. “This is a great early season win for our program,” Coach Mike Netti said about his team after the game. “Now we have to build on it”. Shedrick Haynes led Lackawanna with 21 points, freshman Angel Ayala finished with 20 points and 8 assists, and Thomas White came off the bench to add 11 points and 9 rebounds. The team then traveled back to Palm Beach for Friday’s game against the home team of the event, Palm Beach CC. The home rims certainly were kind to the home team as Palm Beach shot the lights out from start to finish, they knocked down 16 three pointers in a 101-87 win over Lackawanna. Shedrick Haynes and Tarron Stewart had 27 and 20 points respectively for the Falcons but it wasn’t enough, Palm Beach had 5 players score over 15 points, each player connecting on 2 or more three pointers. At 2-1 and with a scoring average of 93.7 points per game, Lackawanna faced their 3rd opponent in as many days against Broward CC. The pace slowed a bit in this third game, as Broward utilized their size with two big men down low, Devyn Erwin and Kervin Bristol. The duo scored a 35 of the teams 64, and their size caused some trouble for the Falcons as Broward snuck away with the 64-61 win. Angel Ayala had another strong all around game with 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Shedrick Haynes again led all scorers with 22. Next up for Lackawanna (2-2) will be back on the road at the College of Southern Maryland on 11/16, they will be looking to get back on track against a fellow Division 2 opponent.
