The Athletic Department of Lackawanna College hosted a workshop for football coaches on March 8, 2009. The workshop was a function of the Bochicchio Sport Character Initiative, a group of college and high school teachers, coaches and athletic administrators whose goal is to enhance the physical, psychological, and character development of young athletes in Northeastern Pa. by providing educational opportunities for coaches, parents, and the athletes themselves. The Bochicchio Sport Character Initiative embraces the philosophies of the American Sport Education Program (“Athletes First, Winning Second”) and the Positive Coaching Alliance (“Honoring the Game.”) The football coaching staff of Lackawanna College, coaches from Dunmore High School, and teachers from North Pocono High School and the University of Scranton served as faculty for the workshop, which attracted 56 youth coaches. Phil Angeli was the workshop coordinator. The program covered “Coaching Essentials” (coaching philosophy, psychology, positive communication, team building, first aid and safety) as well as techniques and strategies specific to the coaching of football. Participants will also complete the ASEP Coaching Youth Football online course. The Bochicchio Sport Character Initiative honors the late Joe Bochicchio, a highly successful coach and educator and a man of outstanding character.
