    Just as computers and electronic devices have become a part of the fabric of our daily lives, computer analysts, programmers, and specialists have become an integral part of the modern workplace.

    Advances in computing helps drive innovation in science, engineering, business, entertainment, and more. Meanwhile, with an ever-expanding field of specialties, there are often more computing jobs than qualified people to fill them in the United States.

    Students who pursue the Computer Information Sciences degree at Lackawanna College will acquire the essential programming and related skills to position them for success in the workplace or as they continue their education.

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of computer and information technology occupations is expected to grow by nearly 490,000 jobs between 2014 and 2024.
    • As of May 2014, the median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $79,390.
    • Graduates are qualified to find work as computer support specialists, web developers, network or database administrators, computer programmers, systems analysts, security analysts, software developers, network architects, or research scientists. Some additional training and education may be required.

    Degree Objectives

    • Acquaint the student with selected programming languages and applications packages, as well as the syntax and practical uses of such languages and packages.
    • Acquaint the student with computer program design using both object-oriented and top-down structured methodology.
    • Provide students with the mathematical background needed to work in a computer programming environment or transfer to bachelor’s degree studies in a similar major.
    • Provide the student with foundation knowledge of the principles used in the field of Management Information Systems regarding computer systems, telecommunications, electronic commerce, security, privacy, and ethical considerations.

    Essential Skills

    • Develop students’ programming skills to a level of mastery that will allow them to quickly adapt to working with programming languages and applications packages other than those covered
    • Determine which computer application or programming language would best suit a particular task
    • Develop logical and step-by-step thinking skills in order to develop, write, and debug programs

    Information Resources

    Information resources used by CIS students include any of the following:

    • Internet resources can be used to acquire:
      • Programming Development Kits (compilers, interpreters, documentation, sample code)
      • Integrated Development Environments/IDEs (source program editor that interfaces with a compiler)
      • Vendor-supplied service packs (bug fixes)
      • Programming language tutorials
      • Product updates and announcements
    • Library resources (print) can be used for supplemental instructional and reference texts for programming and application packages/office suites
    • Library resources (non-print) can be used for computer based tutorials in programming and application packages

    This degree is offered exclusively at our Scranton campus.
